This decision has already been made.

There are no funds available for promotional activities and station upgrades.  As you know, Amtrak service is made possible by federal subsidy.  Our current focus is upon returning the railroad to a state of good repair and obtaining funding sufficient to operate our nationwide system.

Because Amtrak was chartered by Congress to operate intercity trains, commuter operations were left up to the states.  When capacity is available, certain Amtrak trains have seats available at deeply discounted multi-ride fares, most of which are compensated by the state commuter authorities.  Turning the service over to New Jersey Transit also allows faster operation of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor trains as they will stay on the main line, serving our end-point customers more effectively.

Your understanding is appreciated.

Sincerely,
