On Thursday,
November 17th, 2005, between about 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., I (Rick
Booth) surveyed the parking situation in the four main parking lots at
Cornwells Heights.
On Friday, November
18th, a fellow commuter pointed out that I had actually forgotten to
count a little-known and little-used fifth lot run by SEPTA and situated
northeast of the other SEPTA lots, sandwiched as a narrow strip between the
tracks and I-95 above Station Avenue on the southbound side of the tracks. Though it contains 92 parking spaces, only
about 10 cars park there on most days when the main southbound side SEPTA lot
overflows in the morning. Knowing now
of this fifth and (probably) final Cornwells Heights parking lot, the overall
parking stats stand as follows:
Used Empty Total
PennDOT Lot 1
819 65 884
PennDOT Lot 2
0 656 656
------------------------------------------------------
PennDOT Summary
819 (53%) 721 (47%) 1540
SEPTA Southbound Lot 1
105 3 108
SEPTA Southbound Lot 2
10 82 92
SEPTA Northbound Lot
82 22 104
------------------------------------------------------
SEPTA Summary
197 107 304
------------------------------------------------------
Combined Summary
1016 (55%) 828 (45%) 1844
In
addition to these regular parking spots, there were 40 handicapped spaces in
PennDOT Lot 1, with 22 free, plus 4 handicapped spots in each of the two main
SEPTA lots.
With
handicapped spots included, the parking capacity of Cornwells Heights is 1892
cars.
Cornwells Heights
appears to have an excess parking capacity of about 800 spaces, representing
nearly 45% of its total parking capacity that goes unused on a daily basis.
